Exercise Treadmill Stress
Is it OK to use the treadmill with low bone density in the tibial plateaus?
I had stress fractures in the tibial plateaus on both sides, from riding an exercise bike. I rode with no tension, and started out at 3 minutes, adding 3 minutes a week until I reached 45 minute sessions. This happened over the course of a few months. I always cycled at a fairly good clip.
The stress fractures took a year to heal. I have now started using a treadmill, but am worried that it will cause my legs to fracture again because of the impact. However the angle on my tibias is not the same, as the leg is not bending as far forward. I’m in my late 30′s, by the way.
Any advice? Thanks, it’s much appreciated.

I have bad bone density in my whole body but even worse in the tibial plateaus.
Weight bearing exercise is actually good for stimulating new bone formation.
The worst thing you could do is become sedentary. Your bones would thin further leaving you prone to “real” fractures not just stress fractures (SF).
With SF you want to avoid repetitive micro-impact such as jogging on a hard surface. If you caused SF from an exercise bike, these could certainly happen running on a treadmill.
Consider a non-impact aerobic weight bearing device like an elyptical machine or cross-country skiing machine. You’ll get all the cardiovascular and bone-building benefits without the SF risk.
