Weider Total Body Gym 5000
Can you do pilates on a Weider Total body 5000?
I like the Total Gym, the one that Chuck Norris sells but this is sooo much cheaper! Does anyone own one of these and knows if it works for pilates?
The good news: If saving money is your goal, there is no reason to get any sort of reformer (or reformer-like) tool. The Pilates mat workouts are whole and complete unto themselves; you just need a mat.
The bad news: AFAICT, there is no way to learn Pilates without participating in classes and/or privates with a qualified Pialtes instructor. I’ve met a lot of people who claim to do Pilates but only followed videos; they invariably do not understand fundamental distinctions and have bad habits. Until there is a home device which can observe and correct (with hands-on corrections), it is exceedingly unlikely that one will be able to learn Pilates without in-person instruction.
My specific suggestion is to NOT buy this equipment and instead buy a copy of “Strength Training on the Ball” (by Colleen Craig), buy a Swiss Ball, and buy a dynaball (the text will explain what this is). Find someone who is doing Pilates on the Ball classes locally and take at least a dozen classes — at least 2x a week. Optimally, take classes 2x a week for at least 3 months. After that point, you’ll have a fighting chance of effectively working out on your own. This will cost more than the $$ for the equipment you list, but, if learning Pilates is your goal, buying that gear will not help you.
I suggest using the balls because the destabalizing component of balancing with the balls provides feedback to you about correct positioning and engagement. It is NOT a substitute for an instructor, but it will help.
All body/mind activities are a fundamentally different kind of exercise than what we’re used to. Developing your perception/awareness is just as important as the strength you will develop.
